A WOMAN from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane 12 suburb and her two siblings are lucky to be alive as her boyfriend allegedly petrol bombed her family’s house when he discovered that she was seeing another man. The man identified by witnesses as Bigboy Sibanda
reportedly went to his girlfriend’s home on Wednesday at about 1am where he found her and her siblings asleep.
The girlfriend has been identified as Ms Thembinkosi Ndlovu.
He allegedly tied firmly all the doors with a wire from outside, smashed one of the windows and threw the petrol bomb inside the house.
When a Chronicle newscrew visited the house yesterday morning a police officer armed with a rifle was guarding the premises.
A witness who spoke on condition of anonymity said Sibanda and his girlfriend had a quarrel before the incident. Sibanda was reportedly accusing his girlfriend of having an affair.
“Sibanda discovered that his girlfriend Thembinkosi Ndlovu had been cheating on him for quite sometime and they quarrelled over the issue,” said a witness.
“At about 1.30 am we heard people screaming and a thick black smoke coming out of Thembinkosi’s home. Neighbours had to smash windows to save the three as they were stranded inside the house because the doors were tied firmly with a wire from outside.”
A family spokesperson and Thembinkosi’s mother, Ms Ruth Khumalo said she was not aware of what had happened as she was not around when the incident happened.
“I am also in the dark about what happened. I received a phone call at around 1am on Wednesday from my children saying someone had thrown a petrol bomb through the window and the house had caught fire. Two of them sustained serious burns,” said Ms Khumalo.
Contacted for comment Bulawayo City Council fire chief officer, Mr Richard Peterson said they suspected arson and the incident was under police investigations.
“We attended a scene in Nkulumane 12 where three rooms of the seven-roomed house were destroyed on Wednesday in a suspected case of arson. I cannot comment further as the matter is currently under police investigations,” said Mr Peterson.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident and said the matter was still under investigations.
“We are investigating a matter whereby a former boyfriend is suspected to have thrown a petrol bomb at his girlfriend’s home. A male adult who is the brother to the girlfriend sustained serious burns and is admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital,” said Insp Moyo.
It could not be ascertained whether the boyfriend had been arrested.
